Reverse GST Calculator
TaxesWork backwards from a GST-inclusive price to reveal the base value and the exact GST it contains — the tax embedded in an MRP or a tax-inclusive bill.
In short: The Reverse GST Calculator is a free online tool that lets you extract the base price and GST hidden inside a GST-inclusive amount — instantly, with charts, a worked example and the exact formula.

How the Reverse GST Calculator works
Formula
- Amount
- GST-inclusive (final) price
- rate
- GST slab (5/12/18/28%)
- Base
- Price excluding GST
Step-by-step calculation
Worked with the default values.
- 1
Base price
₹11,800 ÷ (1 + 18/100)
= ₹10,000
- 2
GST embedded
₹11,800 − ₹10,000
= ₹1,800
How it works
- The inclusive amount is divided by (1 + rate/100) to recover the base price.
- The GST is the difference between the inclusive amount and the base price.
- For intra-state supply, that GST splits equally into CGST and SGST.
Examples
₹11,800 inclusive at 18%
Base ₹10,000 with ₹1,800 GST (₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST).
Understanding the Reverse GST Calculator
Extracting GST from an inclusive price
Most retail prices in India are quoted inclusive of GST — the tax is already baked into the figure you pay. A reverse GST calculation unwinds that: it recovers the base price and reveals the exact GST hidden inside.
The key formula is a division, not a multiplication:
- Base price = Inclusive amount ÷ (1 + rate/100)
- GST embedded = Inclusive amount − Base price
Why you divide instead of multiply
A common mistake is to take, say, 18% of the inclusive total. But GST is charged on the base, not the gross. So on an 18% inclusive price the tax is actually 18/118 of the total — roughly 15.25% — which is exactly what dividing by 1.18 gives you. Taking 18% of the total would overstate the tax.
CGST, SGST and IGST
Once you have the embedded GST, how it is labelled depends on the transaction:
- Intra-state (same state): the tax splits equally into CGST and SGST — 9% + 9% for an 18% slab.
- Inter-state or imports: a single IGST at the full rate applies instead.
This tool shows the CGST/SGST split used on most local invoices.
When reverse GST is useful
You need this whenever a price is quoted GST-inclusive and you want the pre-tax value: reconciling MRP-based sales, recording purchases for input tax credit, filing expense claims, or simply verifying the tax printed on a receipt. To go the other way and add GST to a net price, use the standard GST calculator.
Pros
- Recovers the base price hidden inside any GST-inclusive amount.
- Shows the exact embedded GST split into CGST and SGST.
- Covers all four slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%).
- Avoids the common error of taking the rate percent of the total.
- Ideal for accounting from MRP-style, tax-inclusive prices.
Cons
- Assumes a single slab; mixed-rate bills need line-by-line entry.
- Splits tax as CGST/SGST only — inter-state IGST is not shown separately.
- Does not compute input tax credit or net GST payable.
- Ignores compensation cess on some 28% luxury and sin goods.
Tips
- 1Use this when a price is quoted "inclusive of all taxes" and you need the base.
- 2To go the other way — adding GST to a net price — use the standard GST calculator.
- 3Record the extracted base and GST separately for input-tax-credit claims.
- 4For inter-state purchases, treat the full extracted tax as IGST rather than CGST+SGST.

How we calculate it
Every result is produced by a single, shared and tested financial-formula library used across the whole site — so the maths is consistent from one calculator to the next. Figures are estimates based on the inputs you enter and standard assumptions (such as regular compounding and constant rates); real-world outcomes vary with taxes, fees and changing rates. All calculations run in your browser — nothing you type is stored or sent to a server.
