Senior Citizen FD Calculator
InvestmentSenior citizens earn a rate bonus on fixed deposits. See your exact maturity and how much extra the bonus puts in your pocket over a regular FD.
In short: A senior-citizen FD pays the standard FD rate plus a bonus of about 0.5% (0.25%–0.75% at most banks), so on a ₹5 lakh deposit for 5 years the bonus alone typically adds several thousand rupees of extra interest, on top of a higher TDS exemption and the ₹50,000 interest deduction under Section 80TTB.

How it works
- The senior rate is simply the standard FD rate plus the bonus your bank offers seniors — usually about 0.5%.
- That combined rate is compounded at your chosen frequency (quarterly is the bank default) to give the maturity value.
- The calculator also runs the deposit at the plain regular rate so you can see exactly how much the bonus adds.
Examples
₹5,00,000 at 7% + 0.5% bonus for 5 years (quarterly)
Matures to about ₹7.24 lakh versus ₹7.07 lakh on a regular FD — the 0.5% bonus adds roughly ₹17,000.
₹10,00,000 at 7.5% + 0.5% bonus for 3 years (quarterly)
Matures to about ₹12.53 lakh; the bonus contributes around ₹15,000 of extra interest.
Understanding the Senior Citizen FD Calculator
Why senior citizens get more from a fixed deposit
Banks reward depositors aged 60 and above with a higher rate on fixed deposits — typically 0.50% over the standard rate, though the bonus ranges from about 0.25% to 0.75% depending on the bank and scheme. On top of the everyday rate advantage, seniors enjoy tax breaks that make the FD genuinely more rewarding than the same deposit held by a younger investor. This calculator shows both the maturity at the boosted rate and, side by side, what a regular FD would have paid, so the value of the bonus is clear in rupees.
How the maturity is worked out
The maturity uses the standard compound-interest formula with the senior rate — the regular rate plus the bonus. Indian banks usually compound quarterly, so interest is added to the balance every three months and the next quarter earns on the larger amount. Half-yearly and yearly compounding are also offered on some deposits; quarterly gives marginally more for the same headline rate, which is why it is the common default.
Because the bonus applies to the whole principal for the entire tenure, its effect compounds. On a ₹5 lakh deposit at 7% for five years, a 0.5% bonus lifts the maturity by roughly ₹17,000 — a meaningful sum for money you were going to lock away anyway.
The tax advantages that matter
Two rules make senior-citizen deposits especially attractive. First, under Section 80TTB, seniors can deduct up to ₹50,000 a year of interest earned on bank and post-office deposits — five times the general savings-interest allowance and applicable to FD and RD interest. For many retirees with modest deposits, this makes a large part of their interest income effectively tax-free.
Second, the TDS threshold is higher: banks begin deducting 10% TDS only once a senior's FD interest with them crosses ₹50,000 in a year, against ₹40,000 for others. If total income falls below the taxable limit, filing Form 15H at the start of the year stops the bank deducting TDS at all, so refunds are not needed later.
Getting the most from it
Retirees should hold FDs in the senior member's name to secure both the rate bonus and the tax breaks, and consider laddering deposits across tenures to balance access with the higher rates on longer terms. A non-cumulative FD that pays interest monthly or quarterly can supply steady income, while a cumulative FD maximises compounding for money not needed until maturity. Finally, weigh FDs against government-backed alternatives such as the SCSS and the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme, which can complement FDs within the safe, income-generating core of a retirement portfolio.
Pros
- A rate bonus of about 0.25%–0.75% over standard FD rates, boosting guaranteed returns.
- A higher ₹50,000 TDS threshold on interest, versus ₹40,000 for others.
- The ₹50,000 Section 80TTB deduction can make a large part of the interest tax-free.
- Complete capital safety with DICGC insurance up to ₹5 lakh per bank.
- Non-cumulative options can pay monthly or quarterly interest for regular retirement income.
Cons
- Returns still tend to only just beat inflation, limiting real growth.
- Interest beyond the 80TTB limit is taxable at the slab rate.
- Premature withdrawal attracts a penalty and a lower effective rate.
- The booked rate is fixed, so a locked deposit misses out if market rates rise.
Tips
- 1Book FDs in the senior member's name to capture the bonus rate and the higher exemptions.
- 2Use the ₹50,000 Section 80TTB deduction fully by keeping deposit interest within it where possible.
- 3Submit Form 15H early in the financial year if your total income is below the taxable limit.
- 4Ladder deposits across tenures for a mix of liquidity and higher long-tenure rates.
- 5Compare SCSS and the Post Office MIS alongside FDs for the income portion of a retirement portfolio.

How we calculate it
Every result is produced by a single, shared and tested financial-formula library used across the whole site — so the maths is consistent from one calculator to the next. Figures are estimates based on the inputs you enter and standard assumptions (such as regular compounding and constant rates); real-world outcomes vary with taxes, fees and changing rates. All calculations run in your browser — nothing you type is stored or sent to a server.
