How the EPF Calculator works
Formula
- C
- Monthly EPF contribution (employee + employer share)
- r
- Monthly interest rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
- Basic
- Basic salary + DA, growing each year
Step-by-step calculation
Worked with the default values.
- 1
Total contribution rate
12% (employee) + 3.67% (employer)
= 15.67% of basic
- 2
Monthly rate (r)
8.25% ÷ 12 ÷ 100
= 0.006875
- 3
Each month
balance = (balance + contribution) × (1 + r)
= iterated over months
- 4
Maturity corpus
after 28 yrs
= ₹1,33,88,900
How it works
- You contribute 12% of your basic salary each month; your employer routes 3.67% of basic into the EPF account.
- The balance compounds monthly at the EPF interest rate declared each year.
- As your basic salary grows annually, your contributions rise, accelerating corpus growth.
Examples
₹40,000 basic from age 30 to 58 at 8.25% with 5% yearly growth
Builds a retirement corpus of several crore, with interest making up a large share of the total.
Understanding the EPF Calculator
Why EPF is the backbone of salaried retirement
The Employees’ Provident Fund is a mandatory savings scheme for most salaried Indians and, for many, the single largest retirement asset they will ever build. Each month a slice of your basic salary is set aside, your employer matches a portion, and the pooled balance earns a government-declared interest rate — recently around 8.25% a year — compounded and credited annually.
Its power comes from three things working together: a matching employer contribution, tax-free compounding over decades, and the discipline of an automatic deduction you never have to think about. Over a full career, interest often ends up dwarfing the amount you actually contributed.
How the contributions split
You contribute 12% of your basic salary (plus DA) every month. Your employer also contributes 12%, but this is split:
- 8.33% is diverted to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), which pays a separate monthly pension after 58.
- 3.67% flows into your EPF corpus.
That is why this calculator compounds 12% plus 3.67%, not the full 24%. As your basic salary rises each year, so do the contributions, accelerating the corpus in your final working years when your salary is highest.
Making the most of it
EPF rewards patience and continuity. When you change jobs, transfer the balance using your Universal Account Number rather than withdrawing it — this keeps the money compounding tax-free and preserves your continuous-service record. Withdraw after five years of service and the entire amount is tax-free; withdraw earlier and it becomes taxable, with TDS above ₹50,000.
- Add a Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) top-up to save more at the same interest rate.
- Watch the ₹2.5 lakh threshold — interest on annual contributions above it is now taxable.
- Check your EPF passbook yearly to confirm contributions and interest are correctly credited.
Held through to retirement, EPF turns modest monthly deductions into a substantial, low-risk corpus — a foundation that pairs well with market-linked options like NPS and mutual-fund SIPs.
Pros
- One of the safest retirement products, backed by the government with a stable declared rate.
- Employer matches your contribution, effectively doubling your monthly saving.
- Interest and maturity are tax-free when withdrawn after five years of service.
- Automatic monthly deduction enforces disciplined, hands-off saving over a career.
- Balance is portable across jobs via your UAN, compounding uninterrupted.
Cons
- Locked in until retirement or specific life events, limiting liquidity.
- The declared rate (around 8.25%) may barely beat inflation over the long run.
- 8.33% of the employer share is diverted to EPS, not your EPF corpus.
- Interest on contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is now taxable, reducing the appeal for high earners.
Tips
- 1Transfer your EPF via UAN when you switch jobs instead of withdrawing to keep it compounding.
- 2Consider a VPF top-up to build a larger corpus at the same attractive interest rate.
- 3Avoid withdrawing before five years to keep the entire amount tax-free.
- 4Link your Aadhaar and KYC to your UAN so transfers and claims process smoothly.
- 5Check your annual EPF passbook to confirm both contributions and interest are credited correctly.
