EMI
P × r × (1+r)ⁿ / ((1+r)ⁿ − 1)
= ₹26,430
How it works
- Repayment usually starts after a moratorium — the course period plus 6-12 months — during which interest may still accrue.
- Interest paid on an education loan is fully deductible under Section 80E for up to 8 years, with no upper limit.
- Once you start earning, extra monthly payments and a one-time prepayment go straight against principal, cutting total interest and clearing the loan years earlier.
Examples
₹20 lakh at 10% p.a. for 10 years
EMI ≈ ₹26,430 with about ₹11.7 lakh paid as interest over the tenure.
Add ₹5,000/month extra once you start working
You save a large slice of interest and finish the loan well ahead of schedule.
Understanding the Education Loan EMI Calculator
Financing education without draining savings
An education loan lets a student pursue higher studies — in India or abroad — while spreading the cost over years rather than paying a lakhs-heavy fee upfront. Banks fund tuition, hostel charges, books, equipment, travel and other course-related expenses. Rates typically run 7% to 15% per annum, lower than personal loans because the loan is purpose-bound and often backed by a co-applicant or collateral.
The moratorium period explained
Unlike most loans, an education loan gives you a moratorium — a repayment holiday covering the course duration plus another 6 to 12 months. This lets you finish studying and find a job before EMIs begin. The catch: interest usually accrues during this period and, if unpaid, gets added to your principal (capitalisation), so you end up paying interest on interest.
- Paying even the simple interest during the moratorium keeps the principal from ballooning.
- Under the CSIS scheme, students from families earning up to ₹4.5 lakh a year can get this moratorium interest fully subsidised for approved courses.
Tax benefits under Section 80E
One of the strongest features of an education loan is Section 80E. The entire interest you pay — with no upper limit — is deductible from your taxable income for up to 8 years, starting from the year repayment begins. Only the interest qualifies, not the principal, and only under the Old tax regime. For a large loan financing overseas study, this deduction can save a meaningful amount of tax during your early earning years.
Repayment strategy
Once you start earning, decide between two levers: claim the 80E deduction while you keep paying interest, or prepay to kill the high-interest drag. Because 80E only applies while interest is being paid, aggressive prepayment shortens the window you can claim it. A balanced approach — steady EMIs plus occasional lump-sum prepayments from bonuses — often works best. Use the extra-payment and prepayment fields above to see exactly how much interest each strategy saves and how many months you cut off the tenure.
Pros
- Funds higher education in India or abroad without draining family savings upfront.
- Full interest deduction under Section 80E for up to 8 years with no upper cap.
- Moratorium period lets you defer EMIs until after the course plus 6-12 months.
- Builds an early credit history for the student when repaid on time.
- Interest subsidy schemes (like CSIS) can make the moratorium interest-free for eligible families.
Cons
- Interest accrues during the moratorium (unless subsidised), swelling the principal you repay.
- Loans above ₹7.5 lakh usually demand collateral, which not every family can offer.
- A weak co-applicant profile can mean a higher rate or rejection.
- Repayment burden falls on a fresh graduate whose income may still be uncertain.
Tips
- 1Pay the simple interest during the moratorium if you can — it stops interest from capitalising onto principal.
- 2Compare public-sector bank rates against private lenders; PSBs are often cheaper for domestic study.
- 3Check eligibility for CSIS or state interest-subsidy schemes before signing.
- 4Claim the Section 80E deduction every year you pay interest to lower your tax outgo.
- 5Prepay once you start earning, but weigh it against the 80E benefit that ends when interest stops.
