How the Bonus Calculator works
Formula
- Annual salary
- Your gross annual pay before the bonus
- Bonus%
- Bonus as a percentage of your salary
- Total
- Salary plus bonus — your total compensation
Step-by-step calculation
Worked with the default values.
- 1
Bonus amount
₹8,00,000 × 15/100
= ₹1,20,000
- 2
Total compensation
₹8,00,000 + ₹1,20,000
= ₹9,20,000
- 3
Monthly equivalent
₹1,20,000 ÷ 12
= ₹10,000
How it works
- Your annual salary is multiplied by the bonus percentage divided by 100 to get the bonus amount.
- The bonus is added to your salary to give total compensation for the year.
- Dividing the bonus by 12 shows its equivalent value spread across each month.
Examples
₹8,00,000 salary with a 15% bonus
A ₹1,20,000 bonus — total compensation of ₹9,20,000, about ₹10,000 a month equivalent.
₹12,00,000 salary with a 20% bonus
A ₹2,40,000 bonus — total compensation of ₹14,40,000, ₹20,000 a month equivalent.
Understanding the Bonus Calculator
Understanding what your bonus adds
A bonus is the extra pay you earn on top of your base salary, and it is usually quoted as a percentage of that salary. Turning that percentage into a real rupee figure is the first thing most people want to do, and this calculator does it in one step. Enter your annual salary and the bonus percentage, and it returns the bonus amount, your total compensation for the year, and the bonus expressed as a monthly equivalent so you can compare it against fixed pay.
The maths is simple. The bonus is your salary multiplied by the bonus percentage over a hundred; total compensation is your salary plus that bonus. A 15% bonus on an eight-lakh salary is a one-lakh-twenty-thousand payout, lifting your total package to nine lakh twenty.
Statutory versus performance bonuses
In India, bonuses come in two broad flavours. The Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 guarantees a statutory bonus to eligible employees below a wage ceiling, ranging from a minimum of 8.33% to a maximum of 20% of eligible wages. This is a legal entitlement rather than a reward for performance. On top of — or instead of — this, many employers pay a performance bonus tied to individual, team or company results. Performance bonuses are discretionary, can be far larger than the statutory cap, and in sales or senior roles may even exceed the base salary, which is why this tool accepts percentages well above a hundred.
Guaranteed or variable?
A crucial question when you read an offer is whether the bonus is guaranteed or a variable target. Many Indian salary structures fold a variable bonus into the cost-to-company (CTC) figure, which can make a package look larger than what reliably reaches your account. A target bonus pays out fully only if goals are met; in a weak year it may pay far less. Before you count a bonus as income, confirm how it is structured, and treat a variable target more cautiously than a fixed, contractual amount.
Tax and smart use
Finally, remember that a bonus is fully taxable as salary income in the year you receive it, and employers typically deduct tax at source, so a large gross bonus shrinks by the time it lands. Because bonuses are usually excluded from the basic-wage base, they generally do not add to your EPF, though they do add to your taxable income. The monthly-equivalent figure here is handy for comparing a bonus-heavy offer against a steadier, higher fixed salary. When a big bonus does arrive, a sensible move is to set aside the tax portion first, then decide how much to save, invest or spend rather than treating the whole sum as a windfall.
Pros
- Converts a bonus percentage into an exact rupee amount instantly.
- Shows total compensation so you can see your full package at a glance.
- Breaks the bonus into a monthly equivalent for easier comparison with fixed pay.
- Useful for evaluating job offers where part of the pay is variable.
- Handles large bonus percentages for sales and senior roles.
Cons
- Shows gross figures — the bonus is taxable, so your net receipt is smaller.
- Assumes the full bonus is paid; variable targets may pay out only partially.
- Does not distinguish between statutory and discretionary performance bonuses.
Tips
- 1Check whether the bonus in an offer is guaranteed or a variable target before counting on it.
- 2Remember bonuses are fully taxable and usually attract TDS in the month paid.
- 3Use the monthly equivalent to compare a bonus-heavy offer with a higher fixed salary.
- 4Confirm whether the bonus sits inside your CTC or on top of it.
- 5Set aside a portion of a large bonus for tax before spending or investing it.
