Understanding the APY Calculator
What APY really tells you
The Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is the effective rate of return you earn on a deposit once compounding within the year is taken into account. A bank may advertise a nominal rate — say 8% per annum — but if that interest is added to your balance every quarter, you actually earn slightly more than 8% by year end, because each quarter's interest itself earns interest. APY captures that difference in a single, comparable number.
The formula is `APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1`, where `r` is the nominal rate as a decimal and `n` is the number of times interest compounds per year.
Why compounding frequency matters
For the same nominal rate, the more often interest compounds, the higher the APY:
- Annually (n = 1): APY equals the nominal rate.
- Quarterly (n = 4): typical for Indian fixed deposits, a small lift.
- Monthly (n = 12): common for some NBFC deposits, a larger lift.
- Daily (n = 365): the highest effective yield for a given nominal rate.
The gap between nominal and effective widens as rates rise, so at higher interest levels the compounding boost becomes more valuable.
Comparing deposits fairly
Two banks might both look attractive — one offering 8% compounded quarterly, another 7.9% compounded daily. The only way to compare them honestly is to convert both to APY. This calculator does exactly that, and also shows the rupee earnings on a sample deposit so the difference feels concrete rather than abstract.
Things APY does not tell you
APY is a pre-tax figure. In India, deposit interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, with TDS deducted once interest crosses the annual threshold. Your real, take-home yield is therefore lower than the APY shown. APY also assumes the rate and compounding schedule stay fixed for the full year, and it ignores penalties for premature withdrawal, minimum-balance requirements and any account fees.
Use APY as the starting point for comparison, then adjust for tax, liquidity and safety before deciding where to park your money.
